So I've read quite some comments, and have some colleagues who have reported that Threadrippers 1st through 3rd gen seem to have quite bad active performance in After Effects.
Mostly meaning that the User Interface is very sluggish, lagging when scrolling the timeline with lots of layers, or moving the composition preview around.
We all know that After Effects does not make great use of lots of cores for rendering anymore (ever since Adobe crippled the "render multiple frames at once" feature), but I've worked on TR machines that perform well, and some that don't perform well in active workloads.
Maybe we can get to the bottom of this and find what causes this and how to get around it.
(This is actually also relevant to viewport performance in c4d on the 3rd gen Threadrippers - which seems to behave similarly)
So long story short:
- What's your experience using After Effects on an AMD Threadripper CPU?
- At what Comp Res size dies your UI experience start getting sluggish
- How many Layers does your timeline have before it starts to get sluggish?
What are your system specs?
